Martes Ferria in Montevideo, Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
It’s really wonderful in Montevideo, Uruguay on a nice warm spring day just when the weather is ready to turn to the beautiful heat of summer.
This is the best time, in my opinion to be in Uruguay. The people are more happy, the days are lazy and the nights are cool and dangerous. I love being here when the fire works go off for the new year and Christmas. I especially love the ferrias -farmer’s market- on a nice hot morning. Just when the early birds -like myself- catch the perfact produce.
I haven’t stopped by the ferria in a while, but today, the guys I regularly buy from were smiles and hellos and it was nice. Even more pleasant are the wonderful fully bloomed fruits and vegetables.
This is the best time to visit Uruguay, from the end of November all the way through March. So if you are in town, there is always a ferria in your area, stop by and see what you find.

Review on Namaste-Montevideo, Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
Recently I had the opportunity to order take out from the cafe Namaste in Montevideo, Uruguay. We had a vegetarian sandwich, fries, tofu and rice, and spring rolls. Of these items the spring rolls were the only ones that came out well. The fries were oily and under cooked, sandwich was creative but tasted poorly, the tofu was okay but had no added spices and the rice was under cooked. One can’t go wrong with spring rolls -I suppose-, so my other half and I enjoyed them and plan on ordering the rolls from Namaste again.
Give it a try and see how you feel about it.

Semi Soft Baby Bell Cheese in Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
Semi soft baby bell cheese in Uruguay, so far Disco Supermercado located at the Punta Caretas Mall has a few choices and have just added a new addition, semi soft mild cheddar cheese. I could not resist so I purchase four small bags, each bag has 6 (I think) small round cheese wrapped in wax.
I was so happy to see that a supermercado here actually caries real cheddar cheese. So if you are in the mood Disco at Punta Caretas Mall offers Baby Bell mild cheddar cheese.

Namaste -Vegetarian Cafe- in Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
There are always new businesses popping up in Uruguay. From clothing stores to Eateries. Some last during their trail periods and others hang on for twenty years or more. So, when a vegetarian inspired eatery comes along, I try to support it. Well, if their food is acceptable of course.
Namaste, located on Br. Artigas 1176 esq. Canelones, tel. 709.55.44 serves vegetarian; lacto ovo, tofu, seitan, and-vegan already prepared foods. My other half along with our dog Midori took a stroll on Arigas to check it out. I went inside and it was a bit confusing, what I mean by that is that I could not decide if I was at a yoga workshop or if I was at the actual cafe, the ambiance is not that clear. I suppose they are trying something new.
It would be awkward to eat there because there only two tables which looked to me as employee break room tables. When I walked a bit deeper in the house, yes I said house allot of restaurants and the like redo old houses in Uruguay for business, I saw cushions and low tables and a couple being served some salad.
I got a menu and I plan on ordering some food today and will report on my experience after.

Cheddar Cheese in Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
I miss cheddar cheese, the sharp flavor that adds the perfect touch to my veggie burgers and home made mac and cheese. You can find Uruguay’s version of cheddar cheese at Disc Super Mercado in Punt Caretas Mall. If you know how cheddar cheese is suppose to taste like you may probably think Uruguay’s version can use a little bit more umph! But if you are desperate for variety and cheddar than it might appease your tastes buds.

Street Conox
Mahalo Chicos,
Street Conox located at Solano Garcia 2576 and Gupuzcoa telelphone number is 712.6669. I have yet the time or hunger to venture off and try this new place so you go and try it for me and tell me what you think.
Its a seems to be a different take on the gyros, but I am not sure. You know what I have said in the past posts; “Sometimes its best to stick to the way it was original created”. End of story.

Dulce de Leche in Uruguay
Mahalo Chicos,
Dulce de leche is a common dessert for the locals of Uruguay. The candy bars above is something I picked up at a local ’supermercado’. There are four tablets in all, they use whole milk and brown sugar to create this creamy rich candy.
The name on the wrapper is called Vaquita Lapatia its cost about 38 pesos which right now the North American dollar equals to about 20 pesos. So as of now its rather inexpensive.
This is something that my other half and I many include in care packages to our friends and families abroad. Its best if they had something that is traditionally made in Uruguay, so this would be a nice small gift.
If you are thinking of a gift for your families or friends, maybe you can take a look at this candy bar and see what you think.

Update on the Soy Products from Disco
Mahalo Chicos,
Remember when I posted about some soy products I purchased at Disco? Well, this is an update to one of the three soy products. The “Hamburger”mostly made from wheat gluten, the color, texture and shape were executed well. However, the flavor was ghastly.
I tried it to make a teriyaki flavored burger out of it and the soy patty still came out vile.
Enough said.

Soy Products Sold at Disco Supermercado
Mahalo Chicos,
I try to go to the super mercado at least once a week, where before during my Personal Chef business I would go about ah, every day. So once a week is a relaxer for me. It’s so funny because from the produce clerk through the check out clerk they always say to me in Spanish, “Cuando Tiempo?” which basically means “it’s been a while.” That just goes to show how often I go.
Anyways, now on the rare occasion that I do shop for groceries I am always on the look out for their new products. Specially pertaining to items Vegetarian and familiar products such as Cheddar Cheese, Hot Sauce and the likes.
This time, I spotted vegan products which is rather “rare” in Montevideo, Uruguay. For this country prides its self with free range-grazed cattle. Where most bistros consider Ham as the other vegetarian option. Get the point?
Located in the freezer section in between the frozen fish and frozen vegetables there is a rather tiny section on vegan foods.
I spotted some battered soy patties, plain soy patties and soy dogs. Not quite the type to purchase frozen foods, I had to buy all three and give it a try.
I am a bit scared to prepare it. For I have no idea what these flavors consist of and if I were to prepare a meal I’d want to at least know what the heck I am using.
So, I think before I even incorporate said products into any recipes I am going to just taste it plain. I’ll let you know what I find and what you can do with these soy products if such things can be done.
Till then.
